Ask JAS: Curl Definition In Your Twist Outs

Question: I struggle with getting and maintaining curl definition when I do twist outs. I have a 4B/4C texture and little curl pattern. How can I get my hair curly using twist outs? It always gets puffy and frizzy as soon as I take it out.

Jameka's Answer: Ehh, twist outs have always been something I've struggled with! lol especially because I have a 4A section in the back of my head that curls with no problem and then as you get to the top, it's the complete opposite. Here are my suggestions!
  1. Set your twists on freshly washed hair. (twisting on dry hair will give you more volume, more so than definition)
  2. As you're twisting, comb each section first (I brush each section with my Denman to help with the curl definition).
  3. Apply a leave-in conditioner or creamy product while twisting to help with the definition OR use a light gel to add to the definition/give hold.
  4. Add perm rods to the ends! These are great for giving added curl and are very lightweight! If you don't have any perm rods, flat twist your twists (if that makes sense) or put them in bantu knots.
Sierra's Answer: Well to be honest, the only twist outs that really work best on my hair are flat twists and not the two strand. I have really curly hair on it's own but I like the flat twists because it keeps it curly without me having to wet it all the time. When I just two strand twist my hair, it just always shrivels back up and ends up being a curly ball. Worst of all it doesn't fully dry and that can lead to frizzies. Flat twists keep the hair close to your scalp and holds the pattern tight so that the hair can mold into a curl form. Plus, you can wear the flat twists for a few days before you take them a loose so it's like having two hairstyles in one. Here's what I do...
  1. Same as Jameka, start with a fresh and clean head.
  2. I actually attempt to half way part my hair decent in whatever pattern I want if I want to wear my twists twisted for a few days.
  3. Flat twist the hair back similar to a cornrow but only using two strands of hair. (I use just 100% shea butter for a moisturizer).
  4. If you plan on wearing the style, make a bun with the ends of the twists. If not, flexi rod or perm rod is fine.
  5. Make sure to moisturize the ends well since most of the products will sit in your roots because the hair is roped around itself... if that makes sense.
  6. When you take them out, make sure you have something on your hands like shea butter or something. The more you manipulate it without having something on it, the frizzies could start to take over.
Once I wear them loose I tend to two strand twist them at night and it works out fine. I just can't two strand twist on wet hair. It never really turns out right.

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

  1. I've found that the longer I leave my two-strand twists in the better my curl definition in my twist out. I usually leave medium/mini twists in for a week, and can rock my twist out for a week.

  2. I find that adding a bit of Lottabody to my spritz help with definition. If you are into all-natural products, aloe vera juice will have the same benefit. I actually use both in my spritz and it makes for wonderful definition even if you don't use a pomade or gel.
