Ask JAS: Time For Protective Styles

Question: When do you suggest using protective styles? I like twists but sometimes I just want to wear my hair in a big ol curly fro.

Jameka's Answer: Ehh, I use protective styles sparingly, but that's just because I like to switch up my styles and try new things. I've never been able to do my hair and leave it in a style for more than 3 or 4 days lol. I think it's up to you when you want to do protective styles. I know many people who retain length without having to do protective styles all the time, and then I know plenty of people who retain length by leaving in twists for months. I actually did wash-n-gos all winter last year *smacks hand* lol

My suggestion would be to know your hair. If it's snowing outside or below 40 degrees, my hair starts to feel gross. She feels really cold and dry, and that's when I know that it's time for me to do some deep conditioning and let her hibernate for a few days until the coast is clear. lol but that's just me. Feel your hair and do what you think works best for it.

Sierra's Answer: hmmm most people do protective styles when it's extreme temperatures, when they've applied a lot of heat to their hair and it needs a break, or like when they need to protect their hair while they wear a weave or something. I don't necessarily think it's a right or wrong time to have a protective style.. And I'm the same way, I love my twists... mostly so I can take them a loose and have a wavy curl. But I don't see why you can't rock the fro year round. I don't go for it in the winter just cause I'm tryna bundle up and I hate having to pump up my bush after it's been under my earmuffs and stocking cap. Main thing is to make sure that in extreme conditions that your hair is moisturized from root to tip.
