Teachers Who Look Like You

This week's Tweetin Thursdays question was:

"2% of teachers in the US are Black males. Did you have Black teachers growing up? How important do you think it is for children to have teachers who look like them?"

Here's what you all said!

--I don't think it matters. If they want to learn they're going to learn. Had both. Don't feel either did any +/- than the other

-- I had black teachers and a black principal growing up and I think it made a difference in what we learned.and it was encouragement for me to see teachers who looked like me and teach things about me on a regular basis

--yup.All black district! But I think a mixture is important, spread out through life. It's important to be able to learn w/everyone

--I had a Black Principal. Its important thinkin back now.

--I had black teachers....it was very important....and they were teachers that I could relate to.....I still thank God for that....

--I think that its very important. I only had black teacher from 2nd-6th grade. During what i think as my most crucial years(7th-12th), i was in a program in our city which we called the" Deseg" program. They bussed city children mostly white neighborhoods in the suburbs. So in my opinion it works too because i work and live well alongside people of all colors. ;)

--One of my favorite and most memorable teachers in high school was a black male. He was so inspirational and motivational for me as a black female and I know he was that much more important for the black males in the class. It's always nice to sit in class and see someone who looks like you and truly wants the best for you.
