AGREE OR DISAGREE: Role Models For Today's Kids

So if you haven't heard about the controversy of Rihanna's new video, or just Ri Ri in general, you may have been sleeping under a rock. I don't really listen to secular music or watch videos, but even I caught glimpse of it through the evening news. *rolls eyes*

Rihanna has been attacked by numerous people saying that she needs to be a better rolemodel, and she has fired back by saying "I'M 23 with NO KIDS!"; pretty much relinquishing any duty as a rolemodel. GASP! But not.

I read, yet another, article on Essence about this and it had some valid points! The writer was saying that it's time for parents to take more responsibility for lack of positive rolemodels. Hollywood can't train our kids and to accuse each and every celebrity who's personal life is in shambles isn't necessarily fair. Yes, in a perfect world the people on tv would encourage everyone to be the best they can be, but really? In a world of reality television and trash tv, we are putting too much faith in "celebrities" and I use that term loosely. I'd like to think that children pay attention more to what examples those around them are setting, more so than celebrities in a remote fantasy world. Is that wrong? I'd like to think that my future students will look to me as an example... or is that naive?

The writer of the article stated, "But at the end of the day, Rihanna is a chick with some videos on MTV and a few tunes on the Billboard charts. So while her antics may raise one or both of my eyebrows from time to time, she doesn't bear as much influence over my child as I do. Folks are so busy chastising celebrities over their fame-induced craziness, but watching Rihanna shoot a man down in central station in front of a big ol' crowd doesn't wield nearly as much impact over a girl as seeing how her mother and father behave on a daily basis. Everyday life? Yeah, that's the real stage. And we should be watching how we act."

What do you think?

NOTE: I know the picture is Nicki Minaj. She recently visited a school to speak to high school students which ties in the overall theme of this article, even though Rihanna provoked it.

  1. I agree, parents are the biggest influence, and they need to spend more time parenting instead of chastising celebrities

  2. I feel that parents need to "grow up" raise their kids and have some accountability. It's like the new thing now is to make celebrities and tv the scapegoat for why their children are sex crazed, foul mouthed heathens. Parenting isn't easy and that's why I not rushing that part of my life but my parents stayed ON me and my sister to make sure we grew to be people of good character and moral character. And most importantly, they were our primary example of what a good person was; how a lady is supposed to conduct herself; what healthy relationships between a man and a woman look like, etc.
