RESPONSES: Natural Hair Is Too Much Work

There wasn't a question this week, BUT many people asked to see the responses from the "#Naturalhair is Too Much Work?" question from last week so here they are!

You can also see over 100 more responses on the video or on the Curly Nikki post!

--its worth it in the end just like most things that take time

--you can wear twists, braids or weaves when you get lazy

--how much or how little time you spend on your hair is a choice, regardless of natural texture or relaxed.

--you don't say anything to them. It shows they aren't ready for and looking for an excuse to validate their point

--I would agree to a certain extent. I think once you find what works for YOU it becomes easier. A lot of trial & error

--I would say, "dont knock it till you try it"

--idk how maintaining natural hair is "too much wrk" whn u are merely allowing it to grow out of your head as is. Problem solved.

--How is NOT doing anything more work than doing something? *scratches head*

-- I would tell them to be patient, get to know other naturals & research products. Also subscribe to yt channels that has helped me out tremendously!

--How much money do you put into keeping that relaxer? lol

--If yu want it, yu will make a way. Patience is definately on top of the list n do ur research..I'm still scared 2cut but I will do it if everything falls n line 4me with payin for school #nccu #wishmeluck n good luck naturalistaS :-)

--Uhm? Agree!

--Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to be low maintenance and natural.

--for me in the begining it was because i am a product junkie...but since i have found a product i like its not as expensive...i am still save money...spending $150 a month when i had a perm to only spending $40 -$50 every three months is better....

--Only the strong survive

--1) I agree with Ashleigh.

2) I think a lot of the "maintenance" and "work" associated with natural hair many people trying to make their texture look a certain way (i.e., more curly than kinky or trying to get so and so's texture).

3) How the hell can it be MORE work. Do you know how much work it takes to keep your hair straight, even with a perm?

4) Half of black womens' lives are spent trying to get in and out of the beauty shop. What could be more work or a bigger time waster?

--Too much work? Some Natural hairstyles can last up to a week. Relaxed hair/ straight hair is just plain boring for me.

--The way i see it...with natural hair all over the place i firmly believe that thats just startin a debate for the heck of it lol, i mean seriously who hasnt looked at youtube lol.

--I say yes it is a lot of work, but its well worth it! This reply usually ends the conversation.

--Im going natural an its going to be a joyful time. 7 months in counting. No more perms yah.

--Anything good is worth fighting for. hard work pays off. soon enough it will become a routine

--They're right it is a whole lot of work. U spend hours putting in twist or braids only to take them out. U hv to work hard to keep up moist year round but in the summer. To go swimming u hv to pre wash & condition only to wash & condition after, it's a lot of work, but anything worth having you have to work for. I'll nvr return to a perm :-)

-- I would argue that hair is a process, relaxed or natural. You still have to take care of it, maintain and feed it.

--I would say don't knock it until you try it... and/or its your hair so do you!

--Honestly, i think we make it more than what it is. You'd have to be strong if you look to youtube and some of these blogs because, imo, the regimens/techniques that they suggest are ridiculous and overboard. Wash your hair, deep condition, moisturize it, comb it, style it...repeat weekly...its simple. I highly doubt that women of yesteryear made this big of a "to do" about how they took care of their hair.

--Nothing worth having comes easy.

  1. That's always a very interesting debate. Having been on both sides of the fence, my natural hair was definitely more time consuming than my relaxed hair. It doesn't mean I wasn't "Strong enough", or whatever.

I loved my hair and all of its texture, but it simply means it took more time to wash and style than I was willing to commit to. That's a tangible measurement is no reflection to not being happy with what's growing out of my head or whatever character flaw is normally associated with one preferring a relaxer over natural hair.

At the end of the day everyone should choose what's best for their lifestyle.
