I've recently been on a smoothie kick, and though I LOVE making them at home, sometimes I'm out and get a craving for one that I can easily pick up without having to get out of my car. SO of course I've been IN LOVE with McDonalds smoothies. THEY.HAVE.BEEN.CALLING.MY.NAME!
But, of course, since I make mine from real fruit, I can taste the difference. Though I respect McDonalds hustle, I was compelled to check out their ingredients list and see just how real their fruit is!
WILD BERRY SMOOTHIE
Strawberry puree, water, sugar, blackberry puree, blueberry puree, concentrated pineapple juice, concentrated apple juice, contains less than 1% of the following:

in addition to low fat yogurt and ice.
STRAWBERRY BANANA SMOOTHIE
Strawberry puree, banana puree, water, sugar, concentrated apple juice, contains less than 1% of the following: cellulose powder,
natural (botanical source) and artificial flavors, xanthan gum, citric acid, colored with fruit and vegetable juice, pectin, ascorbic acid (preservative),
in addition to low fat yogurt and ice.
MANGO PINEAPPLE SMOOTHIE
Water, clarified demineralized pineapple juice concentrate, mango puree concentrate, pineapple juice concentrate, orange juice concentrate, pineapple puree,
passion fruit juice, apple juice concentrate, natural (botanical source) and artificial flavors, contains less than 1% of the following: peach puree, cellulose powder,
peach juice concentrate, pear juice concentrate, xanthan gum, pectin, citric acid, colored with fruit and vegetable juice and turmeric extract, ascorbic acid
(preservative).
in addition to low fat yogurt and ice.
I won't go through the ingredients because, well, you can pretty much see what you're getting. The majority of these smoothies are puree, which is why they have such a smooth consistency. Puree is pretty much, fruit sauce. It is the fruit blended and then mixed with sugar.
Another major product in these smoothies is juice from concentrate. Juice concentrates tend to be low in nutrients, and sometimes cause loss of the original fruit's flavor.
CONCLUSION: If you're looking for a fruit smoothie to help you add fruit to your diet and aid you to a more nutritious diet, THIS AINT IT! lol BUT if you're looking for a sweet, cool alternative to sodas and coffee when you're out on the go and can serve as somewhat of an healthier option (like small fries is a healthier option than large fries), these are for you!

I knew this, but those pineapple mango smoothies are just awesome lol. I won't let them convince me they are real fruit tho.
ReplyDeleteI love the strawberry banana smoothie and I had a feeling that they weren't "real" fruit smoothies but never got around to actually researching the ingredients. Thanks Jameka for posting this!
ReplyDeleteMcDonald's thinks people are stupid. Fruit doesn't come out of a bag! But I sure do love the new pineapple mango! LOL I'll drink it anyway
