This is a personal favorite of many curly girls. Me? Not so much -___- It gives me big nasty buildup. YUCK!
Here are its ingredients!!!!
Ingredients: Water , Carbomer , Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein , PVP , Glycerin , Triethanolamine , Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate , Polysorbate 20 , Tetrasodium EDTA , Olive Oil , Fragrance , Blue #1 , Yellow #11 , Love and Pride
NOTE: Ingredients are listed in the order of their percentage within the ingredient. For example, if water is the first ingredient, the product contains a high percentage of water. The top 5-7 ingredients in a product are, suggestively, the ones to focus on the most.
1. Water- Most products contain water as the first ingredient! It can make up anywhere from 50%-90% of the product!
2. Carbomer- "Gel-like thickeners that tend to flake in high concentrations." *2 snaps to that* I've definitely noticed the flakes!
3. Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein- "Serves as an emollient and moisturizer."
4. PVP- "Used as a fixative, to hold hair together, to keep a product from separating. PVP has the consistency of egg whites." Causes build up and makes your hair sticky.
5. Glycerin- "Glycerin is used as a humectant, and also to add slip in a conditioner to make the product easier for combing. It's also put in products to keep the products from drying up in the container. "
6. Triethanolamine - Helps keep products from separating.
Most ingredients past the first 5-7 are low in their concentration and hardly worth mentioning. Many are fragrances or color dye.
Conclusion: Welp. I can't say that I was already impressed with this product but I am even LESS impressed than I already was. The ingredients in this product WILL cause your hair to flake, maybe not big flakes, or noticeable flakes, but flakes nonetheless. Many people report flakes with this. Some people pair it with other products so they don't have the crunch or the flakes, but that's too much work for me.
I have a love-hate relationship with this product. I may use it to slick down my edges with my wigs, but that's it. I don't like how wash-n-gos look on me.
Shea Moisture is in its final stages of testing for a new curl gel, so I will hop on that the minute it comes out! Yall know I love me some Shea Moisture!
Hope this helps! Let me know what other products you would like to see in this series!

ReplyDeleteI use this.. it's pretty good for me.
ReplyDeleteI think it pretty much depends on your hair. I use it with no flaking and no problems with drying.
ReplyDeleteA lot of ppl mix it in the hand when applying with Shea Moisture. I've tried it and it works well that way too.
Oh I forgot to mention, you may want to try As I Am Naturally. They have a gel also you may like. I love their products. They sell a sample set for $3-4 and you get to try most all of their products including styling agents, shampoos, conditioners etc.
ReplyDeleteMaaan, if Shea Moisture comes out with a gel it is ON AND POPPIN LOL. I use eco-styler for my husband's locs and it works well, but for myself I stick to KCCC
