Hey everyone! I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving and
found some great deals during Black Friday/Cyber Monday ;)
Earlier this week Jameka blogged about some of her favorite
tv shows, so I thought I would piggyback off that post and share some of my
favorite money-related shows! If you are thinking that these are boring,
financial lectures that feel more like class than entertainment, think again!
Here are my faves:
Princesses
This show focuses on the young, spoiled, and financially irresponsible. Together with family members, money expert
Gail Vaz-Oxlade stages a financial intervention on these “Princesses.” They are
put on a budget, put through a series of challenges to teach them about money
management, and get cut off financially from their family during the show. If the Princess participates in all the
challenges and seems to learn something, she can receive a cash prize of up to
$5000 to help with her debt. This show
is relatable because I love beauty and fashion like the girls on the show, but
watching them definitely help to curb my spending!
Til Debt Do Us Part
This is another show by money expert Gail Vaz-Oxlade (love
her!). This show is similar in format to
“Princesses” but it focuses on married couples in debt. However, in addition to
just money challenges, couples are given tasks to help them strengthen their
relationship. I watch this one to learn
what NOT to do when I get married, and it never fails, this show always spark
conversations about money with my fiancé ;)
Downsized
Downsized is a reality show following the lives of the Bruce
family. Hit hard by the recession, the
large family is trying to bounce back from bankruptcy while dealing with health
emergencies, planning to pay for their children’s college education (they have
5 children in high school at the same time), and trying to find ways to make
more money. I love this show because the
family is entertaining, they seem so genuinely happy, and the parents try to
teach their children lessons like responsibility and making smart financial
choices so they can avoid the financial mistakes that they made.
The Suze Orman Show
You all have probably heard of Suze Orman or have seen her
on Oprah. I watch her show to learn
about “grown up” topics like retirement and investing, but I have to admit my
favorite part of the show is the “Can I afford it?” segment where people call
in, tell her what they want to buy, and she will approve or deny them based on
their finances. I’ve heard some really strange
requests on that segment, and Suze is hilarious when she denies them!
