Answer from Jameka: Now that I'm natural, I don't find it hard to manage. There's different ways to manage natural hair as oppose to relaxed hair and once you figure that out, you're good! I didn't really know how to manage my hair when I was relaxed though. I used to experiment with my hair back then like I have to do now that I'm natural, the only difference is that because my hair isn't chemically altered, my "hair mess-ups" don't damage my hair. I may use a product that makes my hair crunchy, but I just wash it out and keep it moving lol
My hair has definitely grown faster and is healthier than when it was relaxed. My hair used to be so thin and I relied heavily on extensions. I've been natural for just a little over a year and my hair has already grown much longer than I can ever remember it being... I get compliments on the fullness and beauty of it weekly, if not daily.
I definitely encourage you to try it out!
Answer from Sierra: Good questions! I want to say that since I've been natural that the world is wonderful and flowers bloom when I walk by in an open field.... yyeeaaahh but it's not that simple. Honestly, at first it was somewhat hard to manage. Simply because you're learning your hair all over again and once you figure out what to do with it, it grows on you so you need a whole new routine! What I figured out four years into being natural... no seriously it took me this long to figure it out... managing my hair is a lot easier when I prep the night before. I was an habitual wash n go'er. No matter what the season that was my do. Although it is nice, I missed out on all the things that my hair could really do. So now I try flat twists, bun outs, flexi rods, two strand twists, any and everything! All these styles are easy to carry over throughout the week.
My hair did grow faster initially. I did the big chop so there was no other way to go but up! lol. But it did seem like it grew out of control over the summer. I think growth has a lot to do with what you do to your hair as well as what season it is. Everybody's hair doesn't grow at the same rate or same time of year so just be patient. My hair is back to the length of what it was when I was relaxed. I imagined my hair to be a long, flowing, wild mane by now but I think it's the longest it may get for the moment. My first tip would be to not expect anything from your hair but healthiness. I was so eager to see my free flowing curls that when I saw tight kinky ones I was almost upset for like 10secs. Then I realized that it's mine and unique just like me so I gotta roll with it and be thankful. I would suggest cutting down on the heat. Also, healthy products make your hair healthy. If you can't read the ingredients fluently, chances are it shouldn't be in your hair.
