week's Tweetin Thursdays question was: "The holidays are often the first time relatives and friends see our #naturalhair and sometimes their reactions can be upsetting, for lack of a better word. What advice/tips do you have for those who are showcasing their natural for the first time this holiday season?" There were a lot of mixed feelings on this topic this week! Many feel that people should accept #naturalhair for what it is and we shouldn't have to prepare for it... but we all know that our family and closest friends can be our biggest critics. We want them to tell the truth but not be rude... which isn't right. For many people, the first holiday season with #naturalhair can be tough. In most instances, you're new to the natural hair world and may not even be fully confident in your "new" hair. SO along with that big change, you head to Grandma's for dinner and everyoneeee starts to go in and say things like, "hmmm.", "why would you do that?" OR my personal favorite from the baby nieces and nephews, "you look like a boy!" -_- This can be very tough for many.... Here's the advice that others had to share on the topic!
-If u seem uncomfortable about ur #naturalhair they will sense that nd make those dreaded "still no perm?" remarks
-Take comments (positive & negative) w/a grain of salt. Everyone has an opinion. Some have no taste or filters! So rock it w/pride
-Don't try a new style out on your family. Do a "trusted" style that you know you can do, and that you know looks good. Jazz it up with a hair accessory, makeup, earrings, etc. And put on some hair products that smell really delicious - everyone will be asking what smells so lovely.
-Hey....as long as you feel good abt yourself....does it really matter how your family feel......that's a red hot negative.... I was recently showing pics of various family members to other members of the family.....one commented that I use ...to have some long pretty hair....my reply," now it's short and cute".......and I love it....emphasis on "I".......I'm sure they're are always gonna be things abt our family that we don't agree upon....but let's respect others choices.....might not work for you....but the best thing that could have happened to them...#I'mjustsaying.....
-Who cares. Rock on and do you. Natural hair is beautiful!
-Smh...the thing of it is that there shouldnt even have to be a prep session. They should take u as is.
The question for this week (12/16-12/22) is: "What's on your Christmas list this year?"
