Many of you may or may not know that I recently completed a semester-long internship where i co-taught in a 2nd grade classroom 4 days a week. My cooperating teacher and the students in my class threw me a going away party a few weeks ago and each of the students made me a card to tell me how much they would miss me.
Needless to say, I left in tears and was so saddened/overwhelmed that I wanted to wait to read all of my cards when I got home so they wouldn't see me cry lol. It was soo interesting to see their cards because the non-Black students all drew me with big hair while the Black girls with natural hair drew me with the stereotypical long straight hair. If I could be a professional student, that would be a great research topic, right? I wonder if the non-Black students paid so much attention to my hair because they had never really seen anyone like it? LOL one girl described me to her parents as "Miss Jameka with the lion mane" lol.
OH and the one Black student who had permed hair also drew my hair similar to its natural state which I also found interesting.
LOL my kids are so cute :)
