Keyshia Cole recently spoke with Essence and stated that she was against the production of the "Frankie and Neffe Show" and that she has wanted to keep her family out of the public eye (due to their family problems). She feels that she's had to live her whole life out so publicly.
She spoke about how reality tv can cause problems because things that happen in private are forced into the public eye which many neglect to see. Our society has ODed on reality television. It's cheap, easy programming for television networks and we are fascinated with seeing the lives of celebrities.
But when is reality television too much? People sign up for these shows, often to build a fanbase or promote a new endeavor, and though the fame does come, most often the lives of these people take a significant turn for the worse. Think ANY newlywed show on MTV, Jon and Kate, Hogan family, 16 and Pregnant/Teen Mom, Fantasia (and her suicide attempt), etc.
The "stars" of these shows often self-destruct while we watch for mere entertainment. Viewers take to social media to document reactions and say the harsheesssttt of things which these stars often read. We are entertained at their lives falling apart. They can never have private moments because the camera is always there which in turn creates even more problems.
So when is it too much? At one point, do you take a stand and stop watching these people self-destruct and walk away from their lives? Granted- it's their fault for putting it out there, but is there ever a line that YOU draw personally? I refused to support the Frankie and Neffe show, but sadly, I watched all the other shows that I mentioned *hangs head in shame*.
Has reality television gotten out of hand? Is this merely a sign of the times or a fad that will pass away?
