It's a very informative article too because we always hear that "OILS ARE GREAT" in the #naturalhair community, but with all the different types, it becomes mind boggling to sift through which are good!
Anywho! Here's a summary of what she printed out for me. The info came from the Thank God I'm Natural blog!
- Jojoba Oil
GREAT FOR MOISTURE! This is a lightweight oil and because it is very similar to the natural or that is produced by the scalp, it is a great "healing hair conditioner".
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)GREAT FOR MOISTURE AND THICK HAIR! This is a great oil for dry or damaged hair, along with extremely thick, coarse hair. Please note that this is a heavier oil and many prefer to mix it with a lighter carrier oil.
- Castor OilGREAT FOR MOISTURE/HAIR LOSS! Castor oil coats the hair shaft and smoothes the cuticle layer, thus sealing in moisture in the hair. Please note that it is a humectant. Like EVOO, it is also a heavy oil.
- Coconut Oil
GREAT FOR SHINE AND MOISTURE! Coconut oil is great for giving hair a healthy shine and minimizing tangles and single strand knots. It's REALLY GREAT for oil rinses! Many use it alone as a hair and scalp oil, but it can also be added to shampoo for added benefits. At room temperature, it is a solid which, to me, makes it easier to apply because it's creamy. Once you rub it in your hands, it begins to melt or you can place your container in warm water for a few seconds, it will liquefy.
- Sweet Almond Oil GREAT FOR MOISTURE! This oil is great for dry, flaky, itchy, and sensitive scalps. This is a light oil and used as a carrier oil. If you use it, make sure that you don't have any almond or nut allergies.
- Grapeseed OilGREAT FOR SHINE! Like jojoba, this is a great lightweight oil! Grapeseed oil is also a natural heat protectant too. It also serves as a preservative in hair care preparation.
- Aloe Vera Oil GREAT FOR STIMULATING HAIR GROWTH! Aloe Vera oil helps to maintain moisture and stimulating circulation. It also soothes psoriasis and eczema, and is good for dandruff.
- Avocado OilGREAT FOR HAIR GROWTH! This oil helps to restore softness to dry and dehydrated hair. It serves as a hair growth stimulant and helps with psoriasis of the scalp.
Other notable oils include sesame oil and safflower oil.
Great Post!! these oils are especially great in the winter. But beware! Coconut oil comes from coconut, which makes it a protein treatment and could possibly make your strands feel harder over time!
ReplyDeleteGreat post! My staples are Safflower, Castor, Coconut, EVOO and Avocado oils. I use them in my hair and body care recipes, and scalp and hot oil treatments. Thanks for sharing. :~)
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this post...I always wondered if I picked the right choices of oils for my natural hair. Now I know that I'm on the right track! Thanks again! :)
