Oprah, YOU BETTER WORKKKKK!! Or Should She? o_O

Oprah just launched her OWN network! (pun intended! lol). You knew that already though, didn't you? What do you think about the network?

I awoke from a nap on Saturday to my mother telling me to turn to the channel and watch lol. So I did. I ended up watching OWN for the rest of the night and the whole time I just kept saying, "OPRAH! YOU BETTER WORKKKKKK!".

Given the norm of conglomerates, VERY few networks are owned by Black people, let alone Black women. So for Oprah to have her VERY OWN network is monumental, at least to me it is. I felt proud to be a Black women and watch Oprah's network come to pass, after hearing her recently talk about her vision of it on her Barbara Walter's special.

I loveeeeee the idea of the kidnapping show. I look forward to the behind the scenes series. I WILL tune in for Master Class. I'll even make sometime for Dr. Phil and "Ask Oprah's Allstars". When Oprah was interviewed about her vision, she said that she was fed up with the negative and distasteful program that is on television and wanted a network that was wholesome and that families could watch together (However, my mom came in and personally changed the channel for me when the show about marriage and life in the bedroom came on lol).

I later headed over to Essence to do my daily skimming of the latest Black culture news and I saw an article that was responding to an article in Clutch magazine on the lack of "Black representation" on the network. It discussed how there is nothing on the show tailored specifically to Black women. This got me thinking (though my thoughts are still on the fence). Oprah's network seems to be something that is enjoyable by everyone... I didn't even notice that there were few Blacks working for her, and that normally is something that would catch my eye lol.

Do you think Oprah has an obligation to have programming that specifically is relatable to by African-American women?

At the same time, if Oprah had a "show for Black people", do you think it too would be scrutinized in how it portrayed us? Do you feel that sometimes Black representation in the media is a lose-lose situation?

Read the article over at Essence and post your thoughts!

As for me, I'm going to continue to support Oprah and this Black women that makes me proud and represents us well!

PS Oprah is natural! SO she definitely gets a thumbs up from me! I'll even throw in 2 big toes! LOL jk.. that's kind of gross :-/

  1. I sadly have not watched anything on the network yet. But I do think that Oprah has been a positive representation of the Black Woman and I applaud her.
