Unnecessary Treatments with Natural Hair

Friday are my nights to sit at home, watch OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), and catch up on blogs. I read many blogs during the week but the ones that post daily posts like CurlyNikki and BGLH, I wait until Friday because it can be overwhelming to read 'em during the week.

Anywho, 2 recent posts on BGLH were very interesting and I wanted to share them with you all and see what you think. The topic may even be the weekly Tweetin' Thursday question

What have you eliminated from your hair regimen because it was unnecessary?

The Great Deep Conditioning Debate

When I first went natural, I was on the quest to get long natural hair in a matter of 2 weeks. Of course, that did not happen lol. I co-washed daily, detangled often, DCed too much, pre pooed, sealed, protective styled... you name it. My hair grew, but not in a spectacularly fast way. I pretty much incurred the same normal hair growth that anyone would incur, if not less #bbmembarassedface

Many of us, correct me if I'm wrong, are so quick to 1) get long hair in a hurry or 2) follow every bandwagon out there for what to do with natural hair *raises hand in admittance*. But I always wonder, would my hair grow the same, or even more, if I stopped some of the mundane and routine hair practices that I've followed for the past year or so.

Freedom used to get weekly, if not daily, treatments, but now I wash once a week, give or take, and rock a braidout and/or puff until it's time to repeat, and she's still thriving.

What do you think? Have you gotten rid of unnecessary, time consuming hair treatments over time? What have you gotten rid of? What are you unwilling to part with?

  1. Co-Washing is overrated to me. I use mild shampoos and conditioner combo's so when it is time to wash (every 2-3 weeks) i'm ready to thoroughly clean my scalp. The styling products I use are for the most part water soluble so if I need to re-style between washes I can usually just spray or rinse my hair with water before re-styling and re-applying pomades/creams/leave-in conditioners.

  2. I was never a 1,714,990,390,817 product type of gal. Long hair has never been my goal, healthy hair is what I've always sought after. So I always stuck to a less is more. When I started wearing wash n go's I cowashed with Suave coconut creme conditioner. Twist outs were kemi shea butter pomade & kemi gel. As my hair grew out wash n go's were with s-curl gel. I used Aussie shampoo & conditioner every 2 weeks. No sprays, no special vitamins, I just kept it clean and slept in a satin cap.
Now that I am loc'd I use redken shampoo and conditioner for red head (I color my hair), mango lime loc & twist gel and in the winter a once daily spritz of juice n berries to prevent dryness.

  3. This is me! I've been natural for almost 4 years, but I didn't get serious about having healthy hair and retaining length until this past October. I am constantly stalking message boards, blogs, and YouTube trying all kinds of products, techniques, vitamins, and herbal treatments. I know it's illogical to think my hair would grow overnight, it didn't stop my product addiction. But now I'm coming back to my senses, and I'm learning to enjoy my hair at any length as long as it's healthy.

  4. I've been feeling the same way. I don't co-wash and I'm thinking about wearing my hair out more...like wash 'n go's because I feel like protective styling is great, but I'm wondering if I would retain the same amount of length without having to do protective styling all the time.
