The State of Education for Black Students

"It's tough." Take it from someone who's seen a plethora of classrooms across a plethora of different counties, it's tough.

We've always known that the ending of "Separate But Equal" legislation was a figment of our imagination, but statistics lately are serving as a reminder that when it comes to education, Blacks are still severely disadvantaged in comparison to their White counterparts. Legally, a school cannot deny a student's enrollment based on the color of their skin, however, "the powers that be" do really well with changing school zones to conveniently make it so that students are grouped. I'm amazed at how different some of the schools that I've been to are, depending on the neighborhood that surrounds it.

New studies are showing that a student drops out of high school every 26 seconds. In addition, 40 % of African American students enrolled in schools nationwide are not graduating. Pair that with the increasing competition in the job market, and you can already make an inference about what the future holds for Blacks that don't finish their grade school education.
