HOWEVER, I think hair typing can be helpful in some instances. You don't have to know exactly the number and letter code, according to the Andre Walker System. A ballpark estimate will get you the help you need lol
Disclaimer: I am a subscriber of bloggers and YT channels of a vast array of women. Some with looser, curlier strands, and some with thicker, coarser, kinkier strands. I am not suggesting that the credibility of these women's opinions relays in the texture type of their hair.
- Products- Kinkier hair, to me, supports thicker products more so than curlier textures. When I see lightweight conditioners and mists as main products, I know that my thick, coarse hair would laugh at them lol. So when I scope through the endless reviews that are on the WWW, I gravitate towards reviewers that have a similar texture to mine. This is not to say that I negate the opinions of those that have different textures than mine. I just know from my own experience that though every head of hair is different, I can usually get similar results when I take the advice of a curly with a kinky texture like mine.
- Styles- Certain styles and techniques to achieve them just don't work on my type of hair. Think back to your experiences watching commercial ads. You know how sometimes you would say, "YEAHHHH I know that won't work for me -__-" It's the same thing. I may come across someone's video where they sprayed their hair, brushed it, misted it with some spray, and had some fierce poppin' curls for a wash and go, and I knowwwwwwwwwwwwww that once again, my thick, kinky, coarse hair will laugh in the face of water and spray being the only products that give me the "wash and go" look. I can't wash and go lol. Styles can vary based on the texture of your hair.

I've found it helpful as well. I've got mostly 4A (with some random 3B and 3C sections... go figure) hair, and when I go on YT, I know the girls with thicker coarser hair like mine will be more beneficial. I know some people HATE the system, but I'm cool with it. As long as you remember it's not the Bible of hair typing, it is a useful tool.
ReplyDeleteFor me, knowing stuff like my hair's porosity and diameter helped me a lot more. I spent ages trying to work out what hair type I am and I still not sure *shrugs* but I now know that heavier products won't work for me at all, because my hair is too fine and gets weighed down really easily, so they turn out lank and greasy looking >.<...
ReplyDeleteI agree with A simple thing. My hair is fine and highly porous. So I know that I need highly moisturizing but still lightweight products. I still haven't figured out my hair type and the texture of your hair can change due to hormonal changes, etc. So for me, hair typing like André Walker's system is not really accurate!
