Spike Lee has been public about how he feels like Tyler Perry's films really display "coonery" and "negative stereotypes of Blacks". Mr. Perry took some time to address it.
Here's some of the manuscript of the Perry's comments about Spike Lee:
"You never hear Jewish people talking about Seinfield saying that it was a stereotype of Jews. You never hear Italians really talking about how the Sopranos were stereotypes of Italians. It's only us as Black people that attack each other...
He’s a brilliant filmmaker. I would have much more respect had he called me up and said 'Brother, I have some problems with the things you're doing.' There’s a lot of things that he could share with me, but for some reason we don’t do that.”
“Instead of taking shots and tearing each other down, why don’t you give me a hand, brother? Tell me what I need to know. And maybe I can show you some things too.”
I agree 101% sometimes we fight each other way too much. I love tyler perrys shows because they are really balanced IMO. For comedy reasons he portrays the ghettofabulous but his shows are the few that show successful black persons in positions of power. In fact he often has fine brothers as lawyers and doctors etc which is a rarity on tv. He shows the good and the bad and alway incorporates good christian morals and values into them. I love hos movies etc and just recently watched his latest one Madea's big happy family. It was a laugh and a half.
ReplyDeleteHe is so right. Spike needs to get off his high horse. I didn't like all of his movies, yet I wouldn't publicly disrespect them. This really goes back to the days when we had to step on another brother just to survive. Tyler Perry is doing his thing, and instead of being proud of his success as a Black man, Spike Lee just tore him down. There was a better way to do it. I agree, a private call would have been nicer.
ReplyDeletei believe in some ways definitely yes...its just we are programmed to think this because for so long that was the only play a person of color could really succeed is by tearing down their own community. I think now the tables have turned but its just habit that makes them speak such thing to others striving for succes...
ReplyDeletei totally agree with tyler perry
