BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE: In order for a hashtag to "trend", a large amount of people have to tweet to it. A GINORMOUS amount of people tweeted to it yesterday because it was the top trending topic in the nation and lasted almost all day.
Twitter is the home of ignorance. I get that. But really? #whatmakesablackgirlmad? The stereotype that all Black women are OD angry is already prevalent in the minds of today's society and this trending topic only amplified it.
Each and every time I logged in and saw it on my toolbar, it made me even more angry. I finally clicked on it to see what was being said, and yes, I was saddened by the tons of black men tweeting to it, but I was saddened even more to see Black women tweeting it.
The best way to counteract ignorance is to not feed into it and support it. Yet, so many BLACK WOMEN fed into it on Twitter.... on top of women of other ethnicities and black men.
As I scanned through, I was hoping to see many more Black women
Here are the ones that I found:
What do you think?
1. Do many Black women perpetuate stereotypes of them?
2. Is the "angry Black women" more of a real character in our society than we think?
3. How do we change the stereotype in the future?
4. What were your thoughts when you saw this trending topic?
Oh my GOD. I was so offended when I saw this on twitter and thankfully I didn't have to follow anyone, because I didn't see anyone on my timeline participating in it. Sadly, I didn't even have to go and read people's responses because I already predicted that 1) it would be SO stereotypically ridiculous, and 2) that Black men AND women would be the main ones participating....
ReplyDeleteAnd the sad thing is that the day before we were trying to get #NaturalHair to trend, and couldn't...but something like #WhatMakesABlackGirlMad always will. smh.
I was notified of this twitter topic via my sister, but I refused to look at the ignorance. Then, one of the students I'm working with for the summer brought it to my attention and wanted me to read them & I did. It's a shame what people thinks "Makesblackwomenmad" because the majority of things I read (outside the ignorance) were things that would make ALL WOMEN OR PEOPLE MAD. It makes my skin crawl to see how lowly society places women of color at times. It's a shame wanting respect from others warrents a hashtag following on twitter. Hence again why I'm not on it!
