Despite my many attempts to NOT be a social eater, I AM! Whenever I need to catch up with friends or need something to do, it results in good conversation around a meal somewhere. Some days, I've gone out twice or 3 times... It's a shame!!!!
It's TOUGH to maintain healthy living when you eat out so often, SO here are my tips for eating out/being a social eater.
1) EAT FIRST. Eat a light snack before going out to eat. It's SO easy to overeat ESPECIALLY when you go starving! If I don't eat a snack beforehand, those are the times I get an appetizer, entree, AND dessert and end up wasting it lol.
2) LOOK AT THE MENU BEFOREHAND. Nowadays you can find a menu for a restaurant online. I make it a habit to look at the menus before I go because when I'm not in the "heat of the moment" i.e. starving at the restaurant, I make healthier choices. If I look at the menu at home, decide on a salad, and get my mouth already craving it, I'm much more likely to stick to that choice when I get there. It will help cut down on binge eating too.
3) ASK FOR A BOX RIGHT WHEN YOUR FOOD COMES OUT. I ALWAYS ask for a box as soon as I get my entree, sometimes even before. As soon as my meal comes out, I put 1/4 to 1/2 of the portion size in my box and it's "out of sight out of mind." Doing this does 2 things:
- Prevents overeating or eating WAY PAST your "full limit".
- Gives you a meal for later, or another day.
