Whether you are trying to become successful in your career or improve your personal life, I think one of the best ways to get to where you want to be, is by modeling after people who have already achieved the level of success that you want. From mentors, advisors, to role models, I can say that I have always had people I could look up to in order to make sure that my life was on track. When it comes to my finances, a role model that I’ve learned a lot from is my Grandma. She can shop like a pro, and always knows about the best coupons, discounts, and best days of the week to do the best shopping. She also has skills when it comes to negotiating an additional discount or knocking off an unnecessary fee! More importantly, she is the most frugal person I know. She never wastes ANYTHING! She has also shared great savings tips with my mother, my favorite being to set aside money every month as if you are paying a bill, so that you can tell if you can handle the payments for a big ticket purchase or prepare for an increase in your monthly living expenses. She even has convinced my mother to put $1 dollar in a jar every time she uses her washing machine (kinda like she is going to the Laundromat, but actually paying herself) as another way to save money. Now I look for ways to save money all the time, but I would have never thought of that one! I guess that’s why I need a role model J
I do have another role model in my head: Tyra Banks. Aside from being an amazing business woman, she knows how to save money! I may be the only one (lol) but I LOVED the Tyra Banks talk show, and I remember many cheap beauty tricks and references to the 99-cent store! Just today I read an article about frugal celebrities that mentioned Tyra using a cheap decorating trick for her office. Also, check out a video below of Tyra on BET’s 106 and Park talking about a cheap D.I.Y trick to spice up her outfit (starts at about the 1:40 mark):
Do you have any financial role models? Let me know in the comments J
