One thing that everyone has in common is that we are ALL consumers. Now unless you live in the wilderness, there’s a good chance that you’re also a shopper! We all know why we do it, but have you ever taken the time to think about how you shop? Shopping involves so much more than just getting your basic needs met, and figuring out your unique approach to shopping is vital if you want to start making better financial choices! Take a look and see if any of these shopping personalities sound like you:
"New New"
You’re the first one in your crew to get the new iPhone. You had the scoop on Argan and Moroccan oil long before it hit the mainstream. Whether its hair products, fashion, or gadgets, you always have the new, new hotness. But here’s the problem… your budget can’t keep up with the pace of new product releases, so every new purchase is sinking you further and further in debt. Now your apartment is filled to capacity with half full bottles, gently used electronics, and probably a few items you don’t even recognize!
Try This: Seek out samples when trying new beauty trends, which are cheaper and take up less space. Also, try practicing the “1-In, 1-Out Rule” where for each new purchase you have to get rid of one item you already own. This may mean finishing up an old bottle of shampoo before buying a new one, or even selling old clothes you no longer wear to make room in your closet (and wallet) for new trends, but the idea is that by having to get rid of or finish up one item, you will give yourself more time to decide if you really need want to make a new purchase.
The Snob (aka "Toni Childs")
You like the finer things in life. Your body is a temple, and anything that enters it is certified organic, and everything touching it better have a designer label…and a designer price tag. Now this wouldn’t be so bad, but you want the runway style but you’re working with a rundown budget L
Try This: First things first, distinguish between paying for quality vs just paying just for a name. Comparison shop to see if more pricier items are really worth the extra price tag, which means reading reviews and ratings of electronics at different price points, comparing product labels for salon brand beauty products and their discount store counterparts, and even looking at the material and craftsmanship of clothes and accessories. Once you find items of good quality, search for discount codes, use coupons, and keep your eyes open for sales so you can get the best prices!
Bargain Junkie
You don’t even think of making a purchase unless there is some sort of discount. You have familiarized yourself with the coupon policies of all your favorite stores, and you always have a game plan when purchase an item. You take pride in your ability to scout out deals, and brag about your savings to whoever will listen. You’re doing everything right, huh? Or so it seems…but the thrill of the deal has led to you buying more than you need, which leads to you overspending each month and sloooowly becoming a hoarder.
Try This: Set a budget and stick to it! By having a pre-set limit on how much you are willing to spend each month, it makes it easier to walk away from that sale. Share the wealth! Use your shopping skills to help out your friends and family members so you can still get the satisfaction of finding a good deal without having to spend your own money. You could even use those skills to start your own side hustle as a personal shopper!
So, I’ll admit it, I was “New New” when it came to clothes and shoes…until I got to college and fell in love with basketball shorts and comfy sweats to trek around campus lol! Now I’m more of a bargain junkie trying to resist the urge to “ball out” when I see a sales rack! What’s your shopping style? Let me know in the comments!
