Things Retailers Don't Tell You

I came across an article on Yahoo about 7 Shopping Secrets Retailers Won’t Tell You. I know how companies spend millions of dollars in marketing products to us and trying to encourage us to buy by any means necessary, but this article showed me some other sneaky ways that retailers are getting us to spend. Here are some noteworthy quotes from the post:

  • How the presentation of products encourage you to spend: "We buy them in Sri Lanka for $3 each. Then we bring them over here and sew in washing instructions, which are in French and English. Notice we don't say the shirts are made in France. But you can infer that if you like…”
  • Why the clearance area is usually in the back of the store: “The clearance racks are placed in the back of almost every mall store on purpose — so you'll be tempted by everything else more expensive in your path.”
  • Why the clearance area always looks messy: "It's really hard to conquer the clearance area in some stores because it's actually designed to make you not want to spend time there”

What do you all think; are their tactics working? Do you go straight to the clearance rack or steer clear? Have you ever bought something on impulse because of a pretty display? Feel free to share!

  1. Luckily, I worked in retail for years and caught onto all the games and schemes they use to entice the shopper. When I walk into a tore, the first place I head is to the clearance section! Lol, then I eventually venture off to the rest of the store.

  2. I peeped that one a while back. Living in Ny I'm always looking for sales so the front stuff doesn't get my attention til I get to the back!

By the way I like what you all have done with the blog having your pretty faces up there :-)
