The Hidden Costs of Shopping

With it being the holiday season, I’m sure many of you are creating your wish lists and shopping for gifts for your family and friends. I remember being a little kid and being so excited to open toys on Christmas day… and then there would be the frantic search around the house trying to find batteries so I could play with them!

With certain items, there are additional products (like batteries lol) and expenses that you need to pay for to enjoy them. For example, I want a new iPhone for Christmas, after being #teamblackberry for years. But in addition to the price of the phone (which will be a gift), I will have to change my data package which will increase my monthly bill by a couple of dollars, and somewhere along the line I will probably purchase a new phone case and car charger to accommodate my new phone.

Some purchases also encourage you to do more shopping in the future. What if I get tempted to purchase a lot of new apps just because I have a iPhone. Or imagine finding the flyest pair of boots in a quirky color that you are dying to buy, but the problem is you don’t have anything in your closet to match them. How many of you would buy the boots, and use it as an excuse to go shopping for clothes to wear with it?

Before making a purchase, it is important to consider these additional costs associated with the item. Include these costs when calculating the total price of an item to see if you can afford it and to determine if the sticker price is actually a good deal!
