Meet Salakida and her gorgeoussss locs!
JAS: Tell us a little about yourself!
I'm Salakida (pronounced sah-luh-kee-dah, means prayer music) I'm a singer/songwriter/Goddess Cali Gurrrl, Light Bearer, Lone Wolf, High Priestess of Smiles, etc.
JAS: What made you go natural and how long have you been Natural? Did you transition or BC?
I've been chemical and flat iron free for over 15 years, and I cured my addiction to extensions about 10 years ago!
JAS: What products do you currently use?
I use Suave clarifying shampoo sometimes, Natures Gate Herbal Conditioner and Natures Blessing hair oil. Jane Carter Solutions or Taliah Waajid styling foam to curl my hair or crinkle it, and vinegar rinses from time to time to restore balance and fluffiness.
JAS: What are some of the positive/negative comments that you've received about your hair?
I get a lot of positive comments, everything from an earnest, "Yo' dreads is pretty" to the proud, "Love your crown Sista". I've had people make assumptions about my religion and my politics because I wear my hair natural, which is always amusing. I do have a "Revolutionary" mindset, but my decision to wear my hair natural is 87% pure vanity, basically because it looks good and feels great :-).

My family was very against my locs when I began the journey; like many people they felt that locs were dirty, unkempt, would keep me from getting a job etc. After seeing my beautiful progression, my Mom asked me to loc her hair too eventually , so I consider that a win!
JAS: What words of encouragement do you have for those who are transitioning or for natural newbies?
Your hair may look different everyday, embrace it, be impromptu beautiful, flow with it!
Enjoy each length and each texture as your hair grows out. Don't expect to look like anyone else. Please yourself with your hairstyles, do what makes you feel great, it's YOUR crown!
